I recently took my son Liam to Coranado Beach. It was a beautiful day. I always forget though how much work it is when you have a little one to go to the beach. Snacks, sunscreen, blankets, towels, drinks, shovels, pales, umbrellas, aye aye aye .. but it’s so worth it. So I get us all packed up and loaded in the car, and drive to the beach. I find a parking spot, grab all the bags and Liam, and hike to our spot in the sand. I get us all set up: blanket down first then the towels placed just perfectly, umbrella up, and sand toys out. Next, I get the sunscreen on both of us -oh and I also seem to forget how hard it is to put sunscreen on my own back! Luckily, Liam helped me as best he could 🙂 As soon as I get Liam’s sunscreen on (he’s still wet and sticky) he dives into the sand and then immediately on to the nice clean blankets! Ahhh!
He had more sand on his body than was on the ground lol.
So I scoop him up and we go to the water. I put his chubby little toes in and he squeals “Mama it’s cold! I’m afraid!” I yell back “It’s good for you! It might seem scary at first but I promise you’ll love it!”.
I held on to his squirmy sandy little body, this was not his first experience at the beach, in fact he has been quite a bit. However, I think it was the first time he started to understand the power of the ocean. His little arms gripped me tightly as we plunged towards the waves. Each time we would approach a wave he would scream in delight “jump Mama!” then we would jump and we would laugh and laugh! A couple times we got knocked down, and over the roaring waves, holding his hand firmly I would yell ” Its OK! Just stand back up! I’ve got you and I will never ever let you go!”
It was in that moment I was reminded of what the Bible says about trials. You see, we think the waves of life are bad for us but they’re not. They’re actually good for us. They may be uncomfortable, but once we stand back up we are even more confident, stronger, more grateful, and even more joyful than before. The Bible says the Lord refines us through various trials and that we shouldn’t be surprised by them. Even in the scariest of moments He is with us. Isn’t so humbling, that His strength is really made great in our weakness?
So don’t be afraid of the waves in your life. They are good for you! The Bible says they are in fact a blessing. Hold fast to Jesus and charge forward. Remember friends, when you are His, He will hold your hand and He will never ever let go!
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
1 Peter 4:12
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.
