Day in and day out, week in and week out, month in and month out, year in and year out precious image bearers of God are being systematically slaughtered by their own mothers and fathers. The most defenseless among us are our preborn neighbors in the womb. The most vulnerable among us are our preborn neighbors in the womb. The most oppressed among us are our preborn neighbors in the womb. We do have many oppressed segments of society that surround us, but none, save the preborn, are being delivered to their brutal, painful, senseless, legal executions on a daily basis.
The reality of the mass genocide of preborn babies occurring all around us numbs the mind. One of my greatest joys is to come home and kiss the faces of my children. I’m thankful every day for the Lord’s protection and that I can come home and enjoy my wacky kiddos and amazing wife. We were just recently gifted our fifth child; the most beautiful baby girl imaginable! She is a bouncy bundle of goodness more wonderful than I can express. When she gives us just the smallest of smiles we all fall in love with her all over again!
I love to wrap her up in my arms, feel her tiny toes and delicate fingers, and look long into her ocean blue eyes. Tickling the bottom of her super soft tiny sweet feet and smelling her pristine baby skin is inexpressibly satisfying. To even momentarily think of my tiny baby girl being torn apart, after feeling how delicate, fragile, and completely vulnerable she is, is an unthinkable, deplorable, and absolutely abominable thought. I would die a thousand deaths a minute before I’d let this happen to my pricelessly precious daughter. Those types of thoughts were never intended to visit our minds. Horrifically, tiny delicate developing babies are being ripped into pieces and burnt alive EVERY SINGLE DAY not far from where you live and work.
Abortion, the calculated murder of babies in the womb, is a blasphemous blight and catastrophic scourge upon this earth that needs to immediately end. The very thought of child murder primarily for the sake of convenience and selfishness should swiftly return to the Hell from which is was birthed. If all was right and well in this world, any move to murder a preborn child would be met with swift punitive consequences.
Along with rage, frustration, and deep sadness over children being brutally butchered, I’m also inexpressibly thankful for Jesus and his Glorious Bride! I’m so grateful that the Church is showing up at the gates of Hell all around this nation fighting for the lives of the preborn. The Church is being a voice for the voiceless by loudly sounding forth Jesus’ glorious gospel to murder bound mothers as they make haste to kill their own offspring. I’m thankful for regular joes, courageous pastors, and brave women standing on public sidewalks working hard to lovingly intercede and offer hope and help. The Church is involved. The Church is active.
Not everybody is playing the same role nor should they. God is strategically placing his people in this battle with a wide range of gifts and pertinent positions of service. Pastors are working hard to lead their churches to rescue those being delivered to death. I’m so thankful for my spiritual leadership and their incessant efforts to end abortion now. They toil, sacrifice, and suffer for the sake of the gospel and for the sake of our unseen neighbors. Please pray for our church and get your church involved. I’m also thankful that our Lord uses the few to do the much. God shows himself strong and reserves praise and glory solely for himself by purposefully using the few, ignoble, unknown, and marginalized to accomplish His purposes. (Judges 6-8, 1 Corinthians 1:27).
But, (and a big but) where is everyone else? Why is the urgency of daily child murder not met with a wider, broader, and larger response from God’s people? Why do those who profess Christ and believe in the inspiration of the Bible do nothing at all to help perishing babies? Maybe I’m making this a bigger issue than it is.
Is abortion that big of a deal?
The abortion issue is a much more important and urgent issue than other issues, right? One common objection to getting involved with baby rescuing goes like this: “Hey, you have your ministry, I have mine. You stick to your calling to fight abortion and I’ll stick to mine.”
Question: Is there more important and urgent endeavors than others?
Ministries and church related goals hold differing degrees of urgency and importance, right? I believe this to be true based on the weight of scriptural commands and simple common sense. The work to rescue babies is much more important let’s say than the work to provide the best church potlucks. I’m not hating on church potluck managers (actually I must confess I do hate potluck beef stroganoff) and appreciate the desire to feed and fellowship, but this ministry is not as urgent or important as the need to preach the gospel and fight for the lives of those headed to the slaughter.
Think with me for a second: say you were heading to church to cook up and spread out the best church potluck imaginable. Good for you! Like I said, fellowship and food are good things to be enjoyed in community. As you’re heading to the church the school bus in front of you suddenly veers to the left and then shoots off the asphalt, down the bank and plows right into the river alongside the road. You have a choice. Stop what you’re doing, forget about your prior obligations, and race down the embankment to try to save the children in the bus who will perish if you don’t act fast. What are you going to do? I know what you would do. You would slam on the brakes, dodge the gross beef stroganoff slamming into your windshield, and race down to rescue those precious little lives. You do believe that the effort to save lives is more important and urgent than other endeavors you may have going. Commanded involvement in astronomically urgent matters necessitates that we adjust our schedules, stop what we’re doing, and divert our focus and energy to the most important and urgent issues crying loud for our attendance.
In Isaiah, the first chapter God speaks forcefully against the actions of his people and their (according God) worthless religious activities. They were busy doing much but not focusing on the more important and urgent matters needing to be attended to. Listen to the scriptures:
Isaiah 1:11-17 “The multitude of your sacrifices— what are they to me?” says the LORD. “I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats. When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts? Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations— I cannot bear your worthless assemblies. Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals I hate with all my being. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening. Your hands are full of blood! Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong. Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.
Isn’t it interesting and telling that the urgent actions God was commanding his people to do were related to justice, defending the oppressed, taking up the cause of the fatherless, etc. All of these activities are directly related to rescuing babies from abortion. Isn’t it interesting that God says that his people’s hands were filled with blood because of their unwillingness to prioritize the plight of the oppressed. Are our hands filled with the blood of innocent babies because we have neglected to fight for their lives?
When God voices a command, we don’t need to have a special sign, calling, or even pray about whether or not we should obey. When God commands, we must obey. We express our love to Jesus chiefly through our obedience (John 14:21).
In Exodus 14 God commands Moses and the children of Israel to cross the Red Sea after telling them that He is responsible for hardening Pharaoh’s heart and provoking him to pursue him with his entire Egyptian army. Can you imagine the scenario? What do the people of God and Moses begin to do? Cry out to God! They begin to pray about the situation. Moses speaks courageously and boldly to the people, but he also begins to cry out to God. What is God’s response: “The LORD said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward.” (Exodus 14:15)
When God commands us to do something, we best get busy actively obeying Him.
The task of rescuing babies from the murder of abortion is commanded all throughout the scriptures. Here’s a few imperatives:
Proverbs 24:11-13 “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. 12 If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?”
Proverbs 31:8 “Open your mouth for the speechless, In the cause of all who are appointed to die.”
James 4:17 “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”
I write all this with fear and humility because I am in need of deep repentance and major maturation in my efforts to fight for the unborn. I lose control of my emotions from time to time. I revile when I’m being reviled even though the scriptures provide this example of Christ:
1 Peter 2:23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
I’ve verbally quarreled with those who desire to quarrel with me even though the servant of the Lord is commanded to act like this:
2 Timothy 2:24 “And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil…”
Both of these fleshly responses are sinful and don’t reflect a spirt led follower of Christ. I seek the Lord daily for the strength and ability to respond and behave as Jesus would. I struggle immensely to love those who blaspheme my God and vehemently work to ensure that child murder continues unchecked and unchallenged. Believe me, I need to do more, work hard on my behavior, and lovingly share the truth of the gospel with a tempered spirit and controlled tongue. This article is intended to lovingly encourage and challenge my brothers and sisters to fight for the unborn, not serve as a platform for self-righteous down talking, condemnation, or chastising.
This article is running long, so I’ll start our descent and prepare for landing. This article was primarily written to encourage you to obey God and fight for the unborn. God has gifted you uniquely to fulfill your role to rescue babies and ultimately end abortion all within the context and in submission to your local church. Legalized abortion is reaping calamity upon our nation and will continue to do so if we do not repent and get to work. We are commanded to defend the defenseless. We are commanded to rescue those delivered to death. We are commanded to speak loudly and lovingly for those who have no voice. If the baby did have a voice, and the instruments were drawing close to her soft flesh in order to destroy and kill, you better believe she would scream, help! It’s time to help! It’s time to end this holocaust.
